Using a NewTek TriCaster with Livestream

Overview

With the TriCaster, anyone can simultaneously produce, stream and record HD and SD network-style productions. A single operator or small team can switch between multiple cameras, virtual inputs and live virtual sets, while inserting clips, titles and motion graphics during broadcast. NewTek TriCaster

NOTE: We recommend using the most recent version of the Livestream plugin with the most recent version of the NewTek TriCaster OS (Rev4e).

Streaming with the TriCaster

File:Tricaster_RTMP.jpg

In order to publish your broadcast from the TriCaster to Livestream, you'll need the following RTMP URL:

rtmp://publish.livestream.com/mogulus/your_channel/username=your_username/password=your_password/isAutoLive=[true|false]

Simply replace the following with your information:

your_channel with your channel name

your_username with your username

your_password with your password

NOTE: Your password may not contain spaces or special characters. Only letters and numbers are allowed. Note that the RTMP URL is case sensitive.

Set isAutoLive=true if you want the feed to go live on your channel immediately - bypassing the need to cue the camera and press record in the Livestream Studio.

Set isAutoLive=false if you simply want the feed to appear as a camera source in your Livestream Studio. You can then manually control the source once the feed is live. By doing this, the Flash Media Encoder signal will show up as "External Feed" in the cameras menu. You will then be able to add graphic overlays and use the source as a separate camera.

Aspect Ratio Conversion Support

/aspectWidth=[number] - If your input camera/feed is not 4:3 - for example 16:9 - set this parameter to 16.

/aspectHeight=[number] - If your input camera/feed is not 4:3 - for example 16:9 - set this parameter to 9.

If your channel is configured to be 4:3 aspect ratio, it will letter box your 16:9 feed and display it correctly. If you did not set the aspect ratio properties and your feed is 16:9 - Livestream will assume it is a 4:3 feed and display it as 4:3 - which would be incorrect for a 16:9 feed.

Advanced Options

Add any of the following parameters at the end of your RTMP URL :

/autoVOD=true - This automatically adds the recording to the top of the Video on Demand list

/autoPilot=true - This automatically adds the recording to the top of the auto-pilot playlist

/bufferTime=[x sec] - Allows you to set the buffer time of the live streaming in the player. By default this is very low (0.5 seconds). Increase if you use a unreliable connection during a live broadcast.

/autoRecord=true to activate auto-record

/autoRecord=false to deactivate auto-record

Broadcast to a Mobile Device

In order to broadcast to mobile devices or iPhone using the TriCaster, you will need to use the /iphone=true parameter in the RTMP URL. You must also be sure to have the AAC audio encoder plugin for Flash Media Encoder installed.

Download the plugin free from MainConcept here

Keep in mind that NewTek does not recommend using custom profiles. Our recommended workflow when broadcasting to an iPhone or other mobile device is to push the output of the TriCaster via S-Video or Composite through a Canopus box to another computer which is running Livestream Procaster. Then, broadcast live at the High & Mobile setting for highest quality video for the web and mobile.

Best Practices for Mobile Streaming

If you own one of the following Tricaster models you can utilize the Livestream Plugin for Tricaster.

  1. NewTek TriCaster 850 Extreme
  2. NewTek TriCaster 850
  3. NewTek TriCaster 450 Extreme
  4. NewTek TriCaster 450
  5. NewTek TriCaster 300

More information on the plugin can be found HERE.

You may DOWNLOAD the plugin HERE.

If you do not have one of the supported versions of Tricaster, you may also output from the Tricaster into a separate encoding computer running Procaster. Procaster has the ability to send up to 4 different quality bitrates simultaneously. You can find a Flow Chart HERE illustrating HD and SD workflows.

NOTE: We recommend using the most recent version of the Livestream for Producers plugin with the most recent version of the NewTek TriCaster OS (Rev4e).

Configuration

Click the Configure button situated next to the Stream (on/off) button to view and modify settings related to streaming your production across a network connection. The Stream Type options allow you to select between Windows Media Pull, Windows Media Push, and Adobe Flash streaming protocols. To the right of these switches is a Streaming Profile selector, which permits you to select from a long list of pre-configured size and bandwidth presets for your Internet broadcast.

Stream Type: Adobe Flash Push Profile - Make sure you use a Flash compatible Push profile when using the TriCaster.

Stream Name - This stream name will identify your unique stream on our servers. This should be something similar to your channel name. It must be a single word with no special characters or spaces such as “mogulusstream”.

NOTE: if you are sending multiple Flash Media Encoder feeds to your Studio make sure you name them differently or they will not show up in the studio correctly.

Username and Password should remain blank, as these are specified in the FMS URL.

Archiving

The TriCaster archives the live stream as a file. Files are saved to D:\Media\Sessions Backups.

This gives you the option to upload the captured/saved file for ‘Video On-Demand’ if you decide not to record live directly to Livestream. This saved file can also be used as a backup if you experience connection issues during your broadcast.
