Viewer Count Implementation

I was hoping that someone could enlighten me as to how I could add a live viewer count to my page. I have seen it in many places and would very much like to do it as well. I have been looking at code on various pages, and have come up with very little that could point me in the right direction.

For example, on teamliquid, how they show how many people are currently viewing a certain video:

I have seen this, too. Have you tried writing them directly and asking them how they do it?

I have, however I have yet to receive a response, and I see it all over the place.
