A bright white background is just eye-burning sometimes.

If this is XP, it's in volume options, you just have to change it to "Adjust volume for: Recording".
I forget how it works in Vista as I don't really work...

Sometimes it gets a bit messed up for some reason but a driver update usually fixes it.
If you already did that, I'd check your recording options....
