Announcing Mogulus Verification

Written by Phil Worthington at 7:01 pm under Production. No Comments

We’re excited to announce a new verification process for Mogulus Free channels which will give all of our best producers maximum exposure throughout the Mogulus Network, while helping Mogulus and copyright owners to better control any potential infringement. Along with that benefit comes a key change that you need to be aware of.

What’s Changing?

To begin, effective February 23, 2009, all UNVERIFIED Mogulus Free channels will be limited to an audience of 50 concurrent viewers and will not be listed at www.mogulus.com. If you apply and we verify your channel before or after February 23, your channel will support unlimited concurrent viewers and will continue to appear on the Mogulus channel guide.

In short, if you want to broadcast to more than 50 viewers at a time or want to be listed in the Mogulus Channel Guide, then you need to verify your Mogulus Free Channel.

Why Change?

  • Mogulus does not tolerate copyright infringement by producers. Applying the viewer limit and adding the verification process will help us and copyright owners to better control any potential infringement.
  • With over 150,000 channels to choose from, we need to help viewers discover great new content. With verification we can better match your channel with viewers that want what you have.
  • As we continue to grow our overall concurrent viewer capacity for the Mogulus Network, we want to ensure that it is reserved for Pro and verified Free channels.
  • It takes effort to build your channel, fill it with great video, and make it beautiful. By adding a step between when you launch your channel and when it is listed, viewers won’t accidentally stumble upon you until you’re ready.
  • Since Mogulus Free channels are ad-supported, we want to make sure that the experience is as good as it possibly can be for everyone. By reviewing your content we can better match ads that fit your channel and your viewers.

Why Verify?

Verified Mogulus Free channels get:

  • Unlimited Concurrent Viewers: Support any number of concurrent viewers for any broadcast at any time.
  • Mogulus.com Listing: Viewers can find your channel by searching or browsing in the Channel Guide or Grid at Mogulus.com
  • Promotion Eligibility: The best content from verified Mogulus channels will be featured for great exposure at no cost, including spotlights and higher search rankings on Mogulus.com, promotion across the Mogulus Network, newsletter features, blog posts, and more.

And, of course, Mogulus Free is still absolutely Free!

What About Mogulus Pro?

There is no impact on Mogulus Pro channels, which already support unlimited concurrent viewers and give every producer direct control over whether or not their channel is published at Mogulus.com.

To set it up, simply download Visual Communicator from Adobe, and configure the streaming settings to include the Mogulus Media Server URL. Complete instructions are available over in the Mogulus Userguide. Enjoy, and let us know how it works for you!

Groundreport.tv WebpageGroundReport TV (http://groundreport.tv) was live at the Democratic debate in Philadelphia on the 30th October 2007. Their focus was to “lift the veil” on big media and the 2008 elections, they presented a behind-the-scenes look at the spin room and campaign machines. Viewers at groundreport.tv were able to participate in the live chat and help steer coverage.

Snapshot of the pageNECN – a local news station in Boston has been streaming live this morning the Red Sox Victory Parade using Mogulus and Wireless EVDO. We thank Steve Safran at NECN who put together such a great coverage. The event reached more than 500 concurent viewers at noon. It is now completed but we will cover it soon on Mogulus Backstage TV.

Last blog, we told you about video effects PC software Webcam Max. We’d now like to give a plug to our friend Steve Green, who wrote CamTwist. This is very useful Mac freeware that’s already used by many of our Mogulus users for amazing video effects.

- Add real-time effects to your live video broadcasts, including RSS tickers, spotlights, halos, zooms, or countdowns.
- Stream still images or animated gifs.
- Stage an effect chain and preview it before pushing it live.
- Move objects around using fine-grained controls.
- Inset separate video streams for a picture-in-picture (PIP) display.
- Use multiple video chat programs or multiple video screens at the same time, with easy camera selection. (Note that CamTwist does not work with iChat.)

CamTwist runs on Mac OS X 10.4 (Intel or PPC). It can be quite resource intensive, so the more CPU processing power the better. The more interesting effects also require Quartz Extreme support. (To find out if your Mac supports Quartz Extreme, go to this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301347.)

You can download CamTwist at http://allocinit.com/index.php?title=CamTwist. Although it is freeware, we do encourage you to give Steve a donation for the privilege of using such great software.
